We are excited to announce our upcoming International Workshop that we believe will be of immense interest to those of you passionate about education and critical spatial practices. Our call for participation is open until the 26th of May, 2023, and we’d love for you to be part of this journey.
Hosted by a dedicated team at the Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture, this workshop invites you to share your personal experiences and critical reflections on situated pedagogies. This concept, rooted in Donna Haraway’s claim for ‘situated knowledges’, suggests that knowledge is produced through multiple, subjective, and embodied perspectives, challenging traditional static roles of educators and learners.
What do we mean by situated pedagogies? Think of it as a transformative approach to learning and teaching, one that is not only specific to its socio-spatial context but also instrumental in evolving educators, learners, and that context itself. We are eager to hear from educators experimenting with critical spatial practices, learners who have been part of such experiments, and administrators who have been daring enough to develop experimental curriculums in support of such pedagogies.
This workshop offers a platform for sharing, learning, and growing, through pre-workshop peer-to-peer reviews, round-table sessions, and field trips in Istanbul. The participation will culminate in post-workshop collaborations for publication. It’s an opportunity to not just be heard, but to also shape and transform the discourse on pedagogies in architecture and other related fields.
Participants are invited to submit a 500-word abstract reflecting on their experiences with situated pedagogies. We encourage you to weave in your personal experiences, as we believe in Joan W. Scott’s viewpoint that every experience is partial, specific, contested, and contingent.
The themes we will explore include but are not limited to:
– transformation of design studio and transformative design studio with a situated pedagogical approach,
– material and social relationalities that suggest resilience and kinship,
– ability to respond with responsibility to new sensitivities regarding current ecological, economic and political crises,
– urgent pedagogies in times of disasters, wars, and displacements,
– collective and trans-local ways of doing beyond the universalized and singular,
– local disregarded and/or marginalized ways of spatial production,
– performative and transformative acts of education.
One of the unique aspects of this workshop is its commitment to inclusivity. It is designed to be an open, non-hierarchical, and participatory event. We are also committed to supporting young researchers from geographically disadvantaged countries, as part of our mission to democratize access to knowledge and learning.
