Kuştepe, Istanbul
o2-o7 September 2024
slow-cooker. (n.) one who:
- extracts inherent flavours of the ingredients and permeates these into the whole dish.
- nurtures and nourishes, and is careful about the whereabouts of cultivation that is a seasoned practice.
- propagates ideas of caring; common imaginaries of spatial nurturing require a slow-cooking process.
In the Kuştepe neighbourhood of Istanbul, we imagine a slowing down of the popular patterns of rapid urban renewal discourse and demand for involvement in the decision-making processes with our spatial practices around a communal kitchen. Those spatial practices may be counted as co-designing lightweight kitchen appliances, growing edible gardens, cooking together, mapping food networks, writing cookbooks, making and disseminating fanzines, sharing and caring around food, and negotiating our position as architects and urban designers in the community as we work with the community.
During the 5-day summer school, we will be working at and around a community house, listening to seminars on the subject, meeting with the decision-makers, activists, and community members, and pursuing several urban fieldworks. For this summer school, we invite students interested in architectural community work, collaborative, intercultural, and interdisciplinary ways of working and questioning the role of the architect and architectural education.
