Success for the exhibition “New Park for Locate di Triulzi?”: Citizens and learners involved

ocate di Triulzi, great participation for the exhibition “New Park for Locate di Triulzi?”, organized by the AUDe (Architecture and Urban Design) laboratory with the sponsorship of the Municipality of Locate di Triulzi and the support of the European project Erasmus+ KA2 SArPe – Socially Situated Architectural Pedagogies.

The initiative directly involved all the students of the Architecture and Architectural Composition 1 Course at the University of Pavia, who exhibited their works produced for the preliminary study of the new urban park project. The event, held on April 12 and 13 at the Cristina di Belgioioso palace, thus saw active participation and exchange of ideas among citizens, students, and numerous local stakeholders.

Following the meeting organized in March with some local stakeholders at the multifunctional center of Locate di Triulzi, the students were presented with the annual project theme, which involves the creation of a new linear park for Locate di Triulzi. This theme had already been included as a strategy to be developed in the territorial government program (PGT) approved last February 2024 by the current administration.

The project’s concept envisions the possibility of connecting the new park to the more central part of the city and, at the same time, creating a system of existing parks, including underutilized areas to be redeveloped and made accessible to the public. To approach the analysis, landscape units corresponding to the different project areas were identified in the park: NORTH-WEST (parallel to Via Aldo Moro), SOUTH-EAST (parallel to Via Nenni), and SOUTH-WEST (Togliatti park area).

The exhibition was organized with a main room, which hosted the preliminary analysis works, and three secondary rooms, dedicated to the exhibition of the students’ works and the working tables for the co-design of the functions of the various landscape units. The works displayed are the result of an analysis process that produced videos of the dérive exercise, SWOT analysis boards of the territory, and representative boards of street art works in Locate di Triulzi.

On the first day, the students and the organizing committee set up the exhibition and worked to produce three elements to be exhibited to the public the following day: a physical master plan of the assigned landscape unit, with localized function proposals; a mood board of images to represent the future project functions; and collages to visualize the park scenario.

On Saturday, the exhibition was opened to the public, and all the material was presented to the citizens with the help of the students. There was thus a real co-design and co-programming for the new park’s functions between active citizens and students. Citizens and representatives of various local associations actively contributed to the working tables for the collection of ideas, offering valuable insights and suggestions.

“The AUDe Laboratory has prepared a feasibility study for the new park, imagining an environmental-landscape framework anchored on landscape units and design layers such as habitat, circulation, and program,” says Prof. Ioanni Delsante. “We did not want to design the master plan, a term we do not like, because we preferred to co-design scenarios with the local inhabitants.”

The success of the “New Park for Locate di Triulzi?” exhibition highlights the importance of collaboration between the university, citizens, and municipal administration.

“The fact of having visualized the new park and made it accessible to the public,” says the lecturer and Deputy Mayor Ing. Diego Torriani, “has produced new meanings and a positive impact on the local community.”

“The event represented an important opportunity for discussion between students, citizens, and stakeholders. The collaboration enriched the design process, confirming the importance of community participation in the enhancement of common goods. The students will continue to work on design solutions, aiming to present concrete proposals for the new urban park,” concluded Dr. Linda Migliavacca.

The enthusiasm and interest shown during the event indicate a strong desire for participation and care for the territory, promising future positive developments for the community of Locate di Triulzi. The event demonstrated how architecture can be a powerful tool for community engagement and the promotion of common goods, a virtuous example of how active participation can positively influence the future of the city.
