International Summer School “+2 Space + Common Good: Social Vulnerability, Active Communities, Self-built Practices”
The international summer school with the title “+2 Space + Common Good: Social Vulnerability, Active Communities, Self-built Practices” was hosted by the University of Pavia in collaboration with the University of Brescia. The summer school took place between July and September 2023, with a two-day online session and an eight-day practical part held in person, in Pavia and in Brescia.
The two online days were dedicated to the presentation of the SArPe project and a workshop on selected literature reviews related to the themes of radical pedagogies, situated knowledges, critical pedagogy, and situated pedagogies, previously analysed by the Unipv SArPe team.
On the first weekend of September, the summer school finally started in person with 26 learners from the four partner universities of the SArPe projectThe first day featured institutional greetings, a participatory workshop on architectural pedagogy organised by the University of Pavia, and a guest lecture. On September 3rd, a full-day workshop on Moruzzi Road with action painting took place.
On Monday, September 4th, the summer school moved to Brescia, where conferences on self-built practices that had been experimented with at the Dormitory San Vincenzo De Paoli Association in Brescia were held.
Through these proposed activities, several objectives were set:
From the July workshops:
- To expose learners and educators to the guiding principles and key readings currently being analyzed within the SArPe project.
- To gather participants’ personal reflections, providing an opportunity to reflect on how architecture has been taught to them and to analyze the assigned readings through their own perspectives and understanding.
From the participatory workshop on architectural pedagogy held in Pavia:
- To foster collaboration among participants, resulting from discussions on non-hierarchical teaching/learning, mutual support, collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge.
From the workshops on Moruzzi and in Brescia:
- To develop some form of individual and collective positioning, which will undoubtedly be challenged by the co design and self-construction sessions during the five days in Brescia.
