AI Workshop 2023

The 2023 AI workshop formed part of the SArPe project’s pedagogical experimentation agenda, specifically contributing to WP3 activities on blended teaching and the exploration of emerging digital tools in architectural education. Hosted by TU Delft, the workshop introduced students to the rapidly evolving ecosystem of artificial intelligence in urban planning and design. Building on the project’s ambition to situate architectural pedagogy closer to societal challenges and to experiment with innovative tools (Objectives O1–O2), the session combined conceptual inputs with hands-on experimentation using generative AI models.

Students engaged with natural-language prompting, text-to-image generation, and critical scenario construction, exploring notions such as diversity, inequality, and justice. The workshop adopted a blended format, combining in-person discussion with digital interaction, thus advancing the SArPe commitment to testing innovative hybrid pedagogical environments.

Student reflections showed both fascination with AI’s creative potential and caution about issues of bias, opacity, and ethical use. These reflections reinforced the workshop’s objective: to cultivate critical digital literacy and to position future planners and designers as active, reflective users of emerging technologies, in line with SArPe’s socially situated pedagogical ethos (O4). The 2023 edition thereby established a foundation for iterative experimentation with AI-augmented design learning.
